Colombia in the US News l Colombia en la Prensa Estadounidense

The NPR reported on the dismantling of the Colombian presidential intelligence agency -DAS by its acronym in Spanish- due to multiple corruption scandals that have surrounded the agency. The most recent of which was the illegal wiretapping of members of the political opposition, human rights defenders and court magistrates under the Uribe administration. The article states that hundreds of boxes containing information that was illegally acquired by the agency are under the supervision of the Colombian government to prevent the information from disappearing. Fox News Latino reported on the increasing numbers of demobilized militants that are joining criminal bands due to the lack of job opportunities. However, the report also states that human rights organizations including the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights in Colombia argue that the vast majority of combatants didn’t demobilized at all. Reuters reported on the letter sent by new FARC commander to President Juan Manuel Santos urging him initiate peace talks with the group. The Santos administration has refused the proposal stating that it has not seen a real interest from the guerrilla to cease fire and move to a permanent demobilization. The Miami Herald reported on the trip that House Speaker John Boehner made recently to Colombia, in support of the implementation of the free trade agreement between the US and Colombia that was approved by the US Congress last October. The Boston Globe reported that seven soldiers have been charged with the killing of a comrade who was then presented as a guerrilla militant killed in combat. In 2006 Larry José Torres was killed by members of the armed forces and dressed in guerrilla fatigues and presented as killed in combat. After investigations it was determined that Larry had deserted the same unit that claimed him as a guerrilla militant, weeks before his assassination.
