The Associated Press reported on the capture of ex-senator Javier Caceres accused of having links with paramilitaries. The Los Angeles Times reported on the achievements of Plan Colombia and how the killing of guerrilla commander alias “Mono Jojoy” gives an upper hand to the armed forces. The article also states that as per the FOR and USOC report on the implementation of the Leahy Law, the increased military operations have come at a high cost for human rights. Time magazine interviewed President Santos while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly on the recent killing of alias “Mono Jojoy”, relations with the Venezuelan and Ecuadorean governments and the current state of affairs in Latin America. The meeting between President Obama and President Santos was reported by Reuters. The publication stated that the meeting focused on the pending Free Trade Agreement and the different ways that the two nations can strengthen bilateral relations. A senior US Trade official expressed to the Wall Street Journal that he was confident that the trade deals with Colombia and Panama will be approved in the near future by the US Congress.
