The Washington Post reported on the recent decision by the Constitutional Court to declare unconstitutional the Military Cooperation Agreement between Colombia and the US that allowed US military personnel the use of 7 bases within Colombia. The agreement sparked a wave of instability in the region with Venezuela threatening to go to war with Colombia. The Latin America Herald Tribune reported on the demobilization of a small FARC front and the surrender of a FARC arsenal in provinces of the northern department of Antioquia. The Los Angeles Times on August 5 published a report on the need for the Obama Administration to reevaluate Plan Colombia and its high cost on human rights violations, even more so when there is a new administration in Colombia. The BBC reported on the legacy of former president Uribe and how his government was marked by successes in the security field but also tainted by scandals, such as the false positives.
