Threats against CCJ lawyers | Amenazas contra abogados/as de la CCJ

On March 2, 2009 at 12:21 pm, the CCJ received a fax directly threatening one of their lawyers, Lina Paola Malagón Díaz, who has been working to reduce the level of impunity surrounding cases of violations committed against unionists in Colombia and whose work on this issue was central to a recent hearing in the US Congress. Also mentioned in the text of the threat was another CCJ lawyer who had to leave the country at the end of 2008 due to persecution by the “Capital Bloc of the Black Eagles AUC” – the same group that sent the fax.

Lina Paola’s report about the impunity in the crimes committed against unionists in Colombia was central to the hearing organized by the US Congress on February 12 – sponsored by Representative George Miller – with the goal of examining the situation of workers’ rights in Colombia and violence against unions. The work done by the CCJ for this meeting was coordinated with the Director of the National Union School, José Luciano Sanín Vázquez – who participated in the hearing. President Álvaro Uribe Vélez publicly stated that the participants of this hearing were twisting the truth, motivated by “political hatred.”

The US Office on Colombia joins the CCJ in emphatically renouncing these verbal attacks by the Colombian government, which ultimately put already vulnerable people in even further danger. The government must provide adequate protection to human rights defenders – including the lawyers at the CCJ. In particular, Ms. Malagón Díaz must be accorded the proper protective measures to guarantee her safety. Furthermore, the USOC calls on the Fiscalía General to promptly begin an investigation into this most recent threat against the CCJ.

El 2 de marzo de 2009 a 12:21 pm, la CCJ recibió un fax amenazando directamente a una de sus abogados, Lina Paola Malagón Díaz, quien ha estado trabajando para reducir el nivel de impunidad en los casos de violaciónes cometidas contra sindicalistas en Colombia y quein fue central en una audiencia receinte en el congreso estadounidense. También mencionado en el texto de la amenaza otro abogado de la CCJ que tuvo que salir del país a finales de 2008 a cuasa de persecución por parte del “Boque Capital de Águilas Negras AUC” – el mismo grupo que envió este fax.

El informe de Lina Paola sobre la impunidad en los crímenes cometidos contra sindicalistas en Colombia fue fundamental para la audiencia organizada por el Congreso estadounidense el 12 de febrero – patrocinado por el Representante George Miller – con el objetivo de examinar la situación de los derechos de los trabajadores en Colombia y la violencia contra los sindicatos. El trabajo realizado por la CCJ para esta reunión fue coordinada con el Director de la Escuela Nacional Sindical, José Luciano Sanín Vázquez – quien participó en la audiencia. El Presidente Álvaro Uribe Vélez públicamente declaró que los participantes de esta audiencia fueron torciendo la verdad, motivados por “el odio político.”

La US Office on Colombia se une a la CCJ a denunciar enfáticamente stos ataques verbales por el gobierno colombiano, que se ponen a las personas ya vulnerables en aún más peligro. Por el contrario, el gobierno debe proporcionar la protección adecuada a los defensores de los derechos humanos – incluyendo a los abogados de la CCJ. En particular, a la Sra. Malagón Díaz se le debe ofrecer las debidas medidas de protección para preservar su integridad y su vida. Además, la USOC pide a la Fiscalía General a iniciar sin demora una investigación de esta amenaza más reciente contra la CCJ.
